2 Long Weekends in August 2015
Good news for Holiday watchers! There are 2 Holidays in August, with an extra Holiday for those working in Quezon City.
August 21 – Ninoy Aquino Day
This year, Ninoy Aquino Day, which is on August 21, falls on a Friday. Ninoy Aquino Day commemorates the assassination of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr., who was the husband of former president Corazon Aquino. Both are considered heroes in the Philippines. Ninoy’s assassination eventually led to the end of the Marcos regime.
Ninoy Aquino Day is a Special Holiday, which means the following payroll computation rules will apply:
Special Holidays
- Employee did not work on the special holiday
- The no work no pay rule applies unless the company has a favorable policy granting payment on Special Holidays. This may still be subject to the Holiday Pay Eligibility Rule.
- Employee worked for 8 hours or less during the special holiday
- Employee will be paid his equivalent (hourly wage x # of hours worked x 130%) + COLA
- Employee worked for more than 8 hours during the special holiday
- For the excess hours, multiply the hourly wage x # of excess hours x 130% x 130%.
August 31 – National Heroes’ Day
August 31, which falls on a Monday, is National Heroes’ Day.
National Heroes’ Day commemorates the National heroes of the Philippines. These are the men and women who have done courageous acts in the country’s history which have helped the Philippines grow into the nation it is today. The holiday honors both known and unknown heroes of the Philippines.
National Heroes Day is a Regular Holiday, which implies that payroll will be calculated as follows:
Regular Holidays
- Employee did not work on the regular holiday
- Employee worked the previous working day: Employee is entitled to his/her daily wage
- Employee was absent the previous working day: Employee is not entitled to his/her daily wage
- Employee worked for 8 hours or less during the regular holiday
- Employee will be paid his equivalent (hourly wage + COLA) x # of hours worked x 200%
- Employee worked for more than 8 hours during the regular holiday
- For the excess hours, multiply the hourly wage x # of excess hours x 130% x 200%.
August 19 – Quezon City Day
Extra good news if you are working in Quezon City, as August 19 (which falls on a Wednesday) is Quezon City Day, which is a Special Holiday.
August 19, 1878 was when Manual L. Quezon was born. Manuel L. Quezon is the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth.
As a Special Holiday, it will the following payroll rules:
